Retail
merchant accounts provide for the lowest processing
rates. They are normally storefront businesses, or any
other business type, that accept credit card purchases
from customers who are physically present at the
point-of-sale (POS).
A credit
card is "swiped" through a POS credit card terminal,
which then prints a sales receipt for the customer's
signature. This allows the merchant to verify the
identity of the customer (or cardholder), that they are
the true owner of the credit card, and as such
authorized to make purchases.
Restaurants
are also considered retail accounts but will often
include tip programs in their account set-up. Tip
programs are available for other business types upon

Mail/Telephone Order (or MOTO) merchant accounts apply
to those merchants who accept credit card purchases, as
the name implies, by either mail or telephone. Meaning,
they receive purchase information including a customer's
credit card account number and expiration date by way of
a telephone call or mail-in order form.
The
credit card account information is then usually
"hand-keyed" into the keypad of a credit card terminal
(although PC-based software can be used), which
authorizes the sale. By accepting credit cards in this
fashion merchants don't have the opportunity to obtain
their customer's signature, or verify their identity as
the authorized cardholder, at the point of sale. As
such, processing rates for MOTO credit card sales are
slightly higher than retail rates (All processing
companies are required to structure their merchant
accounts in this manner).
Internet Merchants (eCommerce):

Internet
merchant accounts are typically used by merchants that
make sales, or provide services, that are marketed
solely through a website over the Internet. Based on an
individual merchant's preference or needs, processing
transactions can be done by a variety of methods.
Product
orders and credit card account information can arrive
from a merchants' website in the form of an email or
shopping cart order and can be "hand-keyed" into a
credit card terminal, or use of Internet Gateway (recommended

for instant verification or entered into a PC-Based
Software processing program linked directly to a
processor via computer phone modem, for authorization.
Virtual
Terminals are also available whereby merchant's can
simply log onto an encrypted website by means of an
account number and password in order to enter card
account numbers, expiration dates, and sale amounts for
authorization and processing.
